Seven Days Itinerary

The brewery 'De Snoek' (The Pike) is the last brewery in Belgium who still has its complete 19th c plant and hasn't changed since it was built in 1871. While the Germans confiscated all copper in the occupied territory, this brewery was situated behind the lines in the non-occupied part of the country, and thus stayed intact.

Seven Days Itinerary

Pieter Feys started his brewery and malting in 1883. The brown beer 'Forte Brune' became their flagship beer. The arrival and success of the pilsner was detrimental for their survival. But after the Second War they couldn't compete with the very popular bottom fermentation beer pilsner. In 1965 all brewing activities were stopped.
In 2001 the buildings were protected as historic monuments. The site is now restored and when works are finished will mix culture, events, housing and a social project.

The merged municipality of Alvering comprises the merged villages of Alveringem proper, Beveren-aan-de-IJzer, Gijverinkhove, Hoogstade, Izenberge, Leisele, Oeren, Sint-Rijkers and Stavele, and together they have. During the First World War, Alveringem, situated just behind the front line, was a crossroads of life and death for four long years.

De Struise Brouwers (The Sturdy Brewers).
In 2001 two beer lovers started to brew their own beer Oostvleteren - and they soon got success, initially especially with Scandinavian and American beer connoisseurs. After that, they acquired broader publicity in their own country. On the Ratebeer website, where beer drinkers from around the world evaluate beers, they were voted the world’s best brewers in 2008.
From 2010, they brew in their beer in an old school building in Oostvleteren, where they also have a tasting room for visitors.
