In this town there is little left witnessing of this early history. But it is perhaps less known that in the Rupel region was produced more than bricks. The production of ceramics that in the Gilliot-factories, Manufactures Céramiques d'Hemixem, Gilliot et Compagnie came from the kilns was also of absolute world class. The factory has disappeared, but the history and some of their most marvellous products are now shown in the municipality "Gilliot and Roelants Tegelmuseum". The Gilliot & Roelants Tile Museum and the Heemmuseum (Local History Museum) are located in the abbey chambers of Saint Bernard's abbey in Hemiksem. The Roelants museum opened its doors in 1988. In 1990, the Gilliot Hall was opened with works by Roelants, Sonja Leemans and Ignace Verwilghen. In addition, you can view molds, special tiles, payroll books and pictures from the old factory. The most important part of the collection, however, consists of the works of Joseph Roelants (1881-1962).He was appointed in 1919 as a designer of tiles and decorative ceramic panels. His work was known worldwide. Gallery:
